JOSEPH LOFTUS CELEBRATES HIS 25TH SACERDOTAL ANNIVERSARY

Joseph Loftus who has been working in manland China and Taiwan for 15 years for the Chinese Province , celebrated his 25th sacerdotal anniversary last June 18, 2009 with some confreres from Taipei and a few DCs and friends. After celebrating the Eucharist in Tienmu, everybody went to a certain restaurant on a hill, where they enjoyed the buffet lunch.

DAWU INSTALL NEW PASTOR AND BID GOODBYE TO FR. DANDY

Last June 7, 2009, on the Feast of the Holy Trinity, Dawu Parish witnessed the installation of their new parish priest, Fr. Dominic Hong, CM. It was the first time for all the parishioners to witness such touching ceremony. Bishop Zheng, the assistant Bishop of Hualien Diocese presided the liturgy.

After the Mass, a farewell program was held in honor of Fr. Dandy who will be leaving soon for further studies. Participated by as many as 400 parishioners, the event made everybody have a heavy heart seeing Fr. Dandy leave.

FORMER PROVINCIAL, JOHN WANG CELEBRATES 25TH ORDINATON ANNIVERSARY

Fr. John Wang, the former provincial, celebrated his 25th ordination anniversary last June 4 at his assigned parish of St. Vincent in Kaoshiung. Attended by members of the Vincentian Family and his immediate family, the Eucharist was filled with emotion for Fr. John as he reminisced his ordination and as he thanked his family.

Afte the Mass, banquet was served at the nearby restaurant. A spontaneous presentation by each nationality created an atmosphere of celebration.

DAWU PARISH WELCOME THEIR NEW PRIEST

Last May 31, 2009, on the Feast of Pentecost, Dawu Parish offically welcomed Fr. Dominic Hong. The Provincial, Fr. Kusno attended the said celebration participated by almost 300 parishioners.

The Youth Ministry was in-charge of the liturgy and the program, to show to everybody and to the new priest that they are the emerging group in the parish. The youth presented their guitar-playing skills with much satisfaction from the audience.

DAWU PARISH HOLD NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Dawu Parish once again held Novena Masses to the Holy Spirit which begun last May 22 and ended on the eve of Pentecost. The novena Masses, attended everyday by more than a hundred people went from one chapel to another.

Sharers were invited to share their faith-experiences about the theme for the day. Everybody was satisfied listening to the varied faith-experiences of
the sharers. After each Mass, heavy snacks were offered and shared by all.

2009 PROVINCIAL RETREAT

Sixteen confreres from Taiwan, a confrere working in Mainland and two seminarians gathered last May 11-26, 2009 at St. Paul's Patoral Center in Hualien for their yearly retreat. Fr. Guo, a certain priest from Chiayi Diocese facilitated the retreat by presenting his talks with the aid of powerpoint.

The liturgy for this year's retreat was more organized and prepared due to advance planning by each house. Multi-media aids were used to make the liturgy more alive and touching.

At the last day of the retreat, Gao Xiang, a novice who took his novitiate formation in the Philippines, took his Bon Propos in the presence of the confreres. The event gave a flickering hope for the ageing Province.

CM-DC Easter Gathering

Last April 13, 2009 the CMs of the Kaoshiung House organized an Easter Gathering of the CMs and DCs residing in southern Taiwan. They invited confreres from Tainan House and the Daughters of Charity from Liu Kui and Tainan to join in celebrating the spirit of Easter. At 12 noon, all were gathered at the St. Vincent Church to pray, then went to a nearby restaurant for a sumptuous meal sponsored by the Kaoshiung House. Enjoy the video here:

Like every the Catholic parish all over the world, Dawu Parish celebrated the traditonal Holy Week. That week were opportunites for the 9 chapels to be together in celebrating liturgies. Parishioners were all enthusiastic to participate in the most solemn liturgy of the year.

Asia-Pacific Visitors' Meeting in Taiwan

Last March 16 to 21, 2009, the APVC met in Taipei to discuss some matters on inter-provincial collaboration. The Visitors from North and Southern India, China, Indonesia, Philippines and the regional Superior of Vietnam were all present. The Provincial of the Australian Province was not around due to some domestic matters that need o be solved. Serfain Peralta, the APVC secretary was also present on the said meeting.

After 2 days of intense meeting, they have 2-day break by going down to Taidong and Kaoshiung to visit confreres there and see some of their ministries. By Friday, they went back to the meeting table to continue their discussion.

AT LAST, WE GOT A NEW PAIWAN ABORIGINEE PRIEST!

After waiting for almost 20 years, a new priest from Paiwan tribe was ordained last January 1, 2008.

Six Vincentian priest were present in that big ocassion attended by more than 3,000 faithful. The ordination was held in Jinlun where the Vincentian presently administer it. Why the ordination was in Jinlun? Because Fr. Xie Hui Nan is a native of Tuban Village which is part of Jinlun Parish.

DAWU CELEBRATES MIDNIGHT MASS

One with the rest of the world, the remote Parish of Dawu also celebrated the Midnight Mass to commemorate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The children from Anshuo Chapel played the story of the Nativity.

There were 7 babies baptized this year by the parish priest Fr. Dandy Labitag,CM. The celebration was solemn enough to make the people feel the atmosphere of Christmas.

Last August 13-15, 2008, the Dawu Parish held their annual Children’s Summer Camp which was facilitated by the Parish Youth Group. There were almost 80 children who participated the event. But what is striking on this 3-day activity was the cooperation, creativity and maturity shown by the Youth Group in handling the difficult tasks of organizing the Summer Camp. FILIPINO CONFRERES AND LAY COLLABORATORS VISIT TAIPEI

Three Filipino confreres namely Frs. Frank Vargas, Vina lacorte and Vhoung Navarro with four Vincentian lay collaborators visited Taipei last July 30 until August 2, 2008. The group came from Sydney where they attended the World Youth Day. Since their plane was China Airline, they confidently thought of visiting Taipei thinking that Fr. Dandy would be their host.

True enough, Fr. Dandy showed them the best of Taipei in just two days. Though they did a lot of walking and riding the MRT, their two-day visit was a good experience of what Taipei is - a modern city yet with a trace of history. See the slide show why.

Dawu Paish celebrate Pentecost with many reasons. First, 21 children and adults received their first communion; second, 10 couples have their church wedding; thirdly, it's Mother's Day,; fourth, visitors from Rome and Philippines visit Dawu.

Novena Masses were held at different chapels in preparation for the Pentecost Day, 9 days before the big celebration. Attendance during the novena were noticeably increased.

FAMVIN ACTIVITIES IN TAIDONG

Last May 9-11, 2008, Jinlun And Dawu were graced by the presence of the visitors from the Vincentian Family, namely, Fr. Manuel Ginete,CM representing the Superior General to the worlwide vincentian family and Betty Pabito, the Coordinator for Asia for AIC.

The Famvin in Taidong prepared a series of activities to co-incide with their visit. They first visited the General Assembly of the AIC in Taidong last May 9 before proceeding to Jinlun for the General Assembly of the Famvin. Fr. Ginete talked about the Famvin in the world. dinner was served after and followed immediately by the Eucharist in honor of the 3 new blesseds of the Famvin.

On May 10,the coordinators of the Famvin had their lunch at an aborigine resto. They hahve a good lunch and warm conversations.

On May 11, Dawu Parish held their Pentecost and graced by the presence of the two visitors.

FR. GERARD DU VISITS DAWU AND JINLUN

Fr. Gerard Du, the Assistant Superior General had his canonical visitation in Taiwan from April 12 to 22. As part of his itinerary, he visited the places of Jinlun and Dawu.

On April 21(Monday), the parish leaders of Jinlun and Dawu have a meal together with Fr. Gerard. On the next day, he went to Dawu parish to visit some chapels. Before flying back to Taipei, he passed by first to the house of the D.C. sisters.

YOUTH MINISTRY IN DAWU

2008 EASTER SPORTS FEST IN DAWU

The Dawu Parish celebrated the easter vigil with a very solemn liturgy. Fr. Richard Preuss, the assistant parish priest presided the liturgy. The blessing of new fire was quite new for the parishioners since there is a traditional dance and singing to prepare everybody's spirit.

Powerpoint was used to help the faithful reflect more on the readings.

On easter sunday, the whole parish gathered again for the Sports Fest in Senyong. The parishoners were so active that the whole activities finished almost 5pm. See the highlights below.

DAWU PARISH CELEBRATES FEAST OF OUR LADY LOURDES

The Senyong Chapel of Dawu Parish celebrated their feast last February 10, 2008 in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. A night before the celebration, they held a Taize Prayer. It was a prayerful and moving activity for the community since the youth were the ones who led the prayer.

During the feast celebration, Fr. D. Labitag, CM presided the Mass. He shared about his experience in his pilgrimage to Lourdes. Blessing and prayer for the sick followed after the Eucharist.

WINTER YOUTH CAMP

Answering the call to have a special activity exclusive for the youth, Dawu Parish with the help of the Sunday School Teachers, organized a Winter Youth Camp last February 1-2, 2008 in Dawu.

The youth built their own tent where they spent the night. The activities were all organized by the youth themselves with the assistance of the Teachers. On the night of February 1, they held a karaoke siniging contest and on the next day, they have basketball contest which were participated also by the youth from Taimali Parish.

In the afernoon of February 2, 2008, a dialogue was held between the youth and the parish leaders. with the dialogue, the youth are hoping to establish their own group in the parish and have an active prticipation in the life of the church.

A closing Mass was held after, of which Fr. Ling of Taimali celebrated.

A NEW PRIEST FOR HUALIEN

The Dawu Parish went with 3 buses to attend the ordination of Zhang Jin Guang to priesthood last January 1, 2007. Though the farthest among all the parishes, yet Dawu's delegation could not be outnumbered by any. There were almost 3,000 people with almost 30 priests attended the said activity.

The said ordination hopefully could encourage the parents to form the faith of their children so that vocation may bloom among them.

During the program, the ladies from Senyong Chapel presented a dance called Flower Offering.

Last December 28, 2007, all the leaders of Dawu Parish enjoyed the Chrsitmas party with a big-screen Karaoke! A festive mood made everybody participate in the contest, singing and dancing. This party is a way of giving thanks to all the leaders and also to make them closer to each other.

DAWU'S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

After being postponed twice, the golden anniversary of Dawu Parish was finally celebrated last December 15, 2007. It was attended by almost a thousand parishioners and visitors and friends, 16 priests, 2 deacons and a bishop.

The eucharistic celebration started with a ceremonial procession of the image of the BVM in native dress. The whole liturgical celebration was so solemn yet so joyous that everybody was in praise of it.

After the Mass, the blessing of the Marian Grotto followed, and then the lunch and the usual program of entertainment.

As a tribute to the first Vincentian who served Dawu Parish, the parishioners prepared a solemn liturgy on the 40th day of Fr. Anton de Britto's death last Sept. 3, 2007(Mon.) in Dawu Church.

A dinner was served for the priests ,sisters and lay leaders at 6 pm and followed by a solemn Mass celebrated by Fr. John Wang. Bishop Zhen concelebrated with 8 other priests.

Almost 200 people attended the said Mass.

DAWU'S PILGRIMAGE TO THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF THE POOR

Last Sept. 1, 2007(Sat.), the old people(65 years above) of Dawu Parish went for a pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Poor in Hualien. The pilgrimage is part of Dawu's 50 year Anniversary celebration. As a thanksgiving for the old parishioners, all the expenses were shouldered by the parish.

After visiting the pilgrim site, they visited Bishop Huang's place and the seminary. They too went to the pastoral center where they bought some religious materials. Though everybody was tired yet they were all happy to have this kind of activity for the old people.

ON GIVING IDENTITY TO THE PARISH

The Golden Anniversary of Dawu Parish is a good opportunity of giving identity to the parish. Having an identiy of their own helps in giving faith to the believers. Thus, in line of the 50 years celebration, the parish have now an image that could relate to their own culture. An image of the Virgin Mary clothed with a tribal dress makes everybody proud of their own cultural heritage and faith.

Last August 26 until Sept 3, the Virgin Mary visited all the 9 chapels. Each chapel welcomed with great pride the image of the Virgin Mary.

DAWU PARISH 2007 CHILDREN'S SUMMER CAMP

Last July 3-9 2007, the children from the 9 chapels of Dawu Parish gathered together for a week-long camp. This year, we invited some students from FuJen University in Taipei to help us facitilitate the camp. The FuJen students of foreign languages taught the kids with some spanish and english lessons.

The high school students from the Parish helped in facilitating the camp. They did a great job of being big brothers and sisters to the kids.

ON-GOING FORMATION

Last June 25 to 29, 2007 the confreres from the Chinese Province attended the yearly on-going formation. The said activity was held in Jiang Hua at Manresa Retreat House.

On June 27,the group took a break by going to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village...see the pictures below for they speak better than words.

PENTECOST CELEBRATION

As the Dawu Parish celebrate their 50 years, the Pentecost Sunday was extra special. Twenty-five(25) couples who are married in the church for more than 25 years, renewed their marriage vows.

Bishop Zhen presided the celebration while Fr. John Wang concelebrated. The 25 couples were all happy to experience once again how to be wed in the church.

After the Mass, people enjoyed the food bazaar and the low-priced goods at the garage sale. The proceeds of the food bazaar and garage sale all went to the 50 year celebration and renovation of the church.

Raffle draws were held. Prizes were so many like bicycles, washing machines, tv sets and other expensive things.

It was a day to remember and will always be a big part of the history of the parish!

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Last May 18-26, Dawu Parish held a novena Masses in preparation for the Pentecost. Each 9 chapels has a novena Mass. Almost 100 or more persons attended the Mass each night. Since the parish is celebrating its 50 years, the main topic for this year is "The Role of the Holy Spirit in the History of the Chapel". It was an opportunity to research their own history and share to others their stories.

During the Mass, a person shared the history and a video/picture presentations were presented. Thanks for the old parishioners who shared their old pictures for everybody to see.

Last December 16, 2006 the Dawu Parish held the lighting of Christmas lights and children's christmas party. It was a night of fun for more than 130 children. They prepared well for their presentations and some were well-dressed for the occassion.

The most awaited part of the program was the count-down for the lighting of christmas lights and the apperance of Santa Claus. Children were all excited to see Santa Claus and received gifts from him.

The Mass was presided by Ge Shenfu, the Provincial Visitor of Bethlehem Fathers and attended by hundreds of parishioners and visitors.

At the end of the Mass, we give recognition to the first batch who received baptism in shangwu. We also thanked the Bethlem Fathers and the Holy Cross Sisters for their mission and pastoral works.

The Shangwu Chapel held a 3-day novena prayer in preparation for the celebration of their 50 years as a chapel last Dec. 1-3. Parishioners from other chapels attended too the said novena.

The Feast of the Miraculous Medal was celebrated with festivities by the confreres and parishioners from the south in Ma Chang. Pilgrims from Si Hu(1 Bus), Jin Lun(1 Bus), Da Wu(2 Buses) made the celebration more alive. The Parish of Kang Shan prepared the said activities.

After the Mass a procession up to the shrine was held. Everybody offered a flower to the Virgin as they reached the grotto. The Blessed Sacrament was carried by Fr. John Wang up on the grotto for everybody to venerate.

The novena to MM was successfully held on 9 consecutive evening from Nov. 15 to Nov. 24. Everynight, a person shared his/her personal experience with Mary in relation with the theme for the day. Everyday almost 150 parishioners faithfully attended the said novena.

Everybody is invited on December 9, 2006(Saturday), 9 A.M. for Shangwu's 50 years as a chapel. We invited the Provincial Superior of th Bethlehem Fathers to celebrate the Mass to give them honor for their labor of evangelizing the people.

DAWU PARISH WILL CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL

Dawu Parish will start their traditional celebration for the Feast of the Miraculous Medal on November 16 as they start to have their 1st day of their 9-day novena Masses.

Since the Parish has 9 chapels, each chapel will sponsor a day for the novena. Since last year, people attending the noven mass are getting bigger. They started last year to invite parishioners to share on the theme for the day...since then, they look forward hearing their own friends share some insights.

On November 25, the Parish will go to Ma Chang for a pilgrimage with other Vincentian parishes from the south.

GAO XIANG (Thomas) celebrates his 28th brithday
Some friends join Thomas (Pei yun - Chinese DC, Liu qin - Chinese DC, Shen Rong Bin - Kaohsiung Diocesan priest living with us) Thomas, in order to look like his Formator, chose to get a very short haircut. Thomas is at present studying Philosophy at a nearby Claretian Fathers' Seminary.

HARVEST FESTIVAL IN DAWU

Last July 9, 2006 the Parish in Dawu celebrated the Harvest Festival with much festivities. The harvest fest is traditional feast for the aboriginal people. It is their way of thanking God for the blessings they have received throughout the year.

To co-incide with the celebration, the Bishop of Hualien was invited to officiate the Mass and to give the Sacrament of Confirmation to 22 parishioners. He was very much delighted by the energy of the parishioners. It was a moment for the bishop to know and be in touch his flock in Dawu.

The parishioners themselves prepared their aboriginal food and presented some very traditional aboriginal dances. The people from Xin Hua Chapel made the biggst impact by leading the people with their presentation of "prayer of thanksgiving of the paiwan tribe".

Our Two Youngest Seminarians

THOMAS GAO 高翔 & PAUL YING 应能惠 are are youngest students in the Philippines. The three of us are living in a rented house near the CM seminary. We've discovered its better having a FORMATION HOUSE of our own as compared to living in our CM seminary. Thomas has begun his studies of Philosophy at a nearby Claretian school and Paul continues his English classes. Both are fine.
Today two new Filipino priests and two deacons were ordained. Lay Brother Bro. Joey Enriquez took his Perpetual Vows.Thanks be too God!

A beautiful Noise

The priest looked like he might have been a boxer in a former life, but his open face and obvious good humour quickly corrected the startling first impression. The parish church, a typical example of early 90’s faux Chinese Gothic (stick a spire in front of a large box and call it art!) was full. This was despite it being 8 am and I, who had driven since 6 to be there, was even more convinced than ever that I don’t DO mornings. The Church brass band, presided over by a uniformed and rather serious conductor, made up for what was lacking in technique with a SOUND which was deafening. It lead a rather motley crew, which varied from schoolgirls in matching dresses to ten priests of varying girths, into the church to begin the annual celebration of Corpus Christi in a Catholic village in north China. What followed was a Mass which would have been recognisable in any county parish anywhere. It unfolded smoothly, with a predictable beginning, middle and end. Devotion was in evidence and the antics of the altar servers were stared down by a very attentive sacristan. It may not have been cutting edge, but the liturgy was performed with a confidence and dignity which would have warrant high praise even in the Vatican. My presence, added a whiff of sophistication to the proceedings as we were deep enough into the countryside to for a foreigner, any foreigner, to raise the tone of the event somewhat. When asked to say a few words, the attempt at observing that we are Catholics under the skin, seemed to go down well, or at least they hid their miscomprehension with a polite clap at my conclusion.

The Corpus Christi procession followed. The Blessed Sacrament, under its canopy, was carried with great solemnity around the village. We stopping for a blessing at various stages en route, with an extended halt in the village market for another sermon, (only the forth since proceedings began!). The band led the way and their particular skill ensures that there could be no surprise on our arrival at each venue. Two of the matching dresses took turns in what could only be described as pelting the Blessed Sacrament with rose petals. I fear the idea of tossing the dismembered flowers before the feet of the priest carrying the Monstrance had gotten lost in translation. The women taking up the rear insisted on singing their own set of hymns irrespective of the melody, if one could call it that, being proposed by the band at the head of the 600 strong crowd. The stall holders, not locals, in the market looked bemused by the whole thing, but since this is a 100% Catholic village, the bemused were swallowed up in the devout and they all came along for the show. We ended up back in the church for one last blessing and a final blast from the band of what could only be described as a robust rendition of “What a friend we have in Jesus. We retired to lunch at 11.30.

Having seen what happened in Zhang Zhuang, I am reminded of “The Stripping of the Altars” a history of the Reformation in England which focuses on the experience of Parishes in the transition from late medieval Catholicism to Anglicanism. One of the facts that surprised me of how much people objected to loosing processions. Now I can see why. Here was a complete society celebrating itself and its faith in a complicated mixture of devotion and what we Irish call “devarsion” You could see it in the not quite complete piety displayed by the young blades who knelt dutifully enough, but whose eyes roved more than the rubrics would recommend. You could see it in the carefully hung bunting and the intense engagement shown by the team of haulers who made sure that scarce accoutrements were whisked ahead of the throng to the next station. You could see in the piles of flowers prepared for the pelting and the carefully matched homemade dresses. At another level you could see it in the route chosen. We went through the village, touching its boundaries, but also claiming its heart, the market, for Christ. Here was a self confident parish successfully claiming the public space as its own, rather like a robin marks it s territory by urinating on it. (Excuse the simile, but is the only one I can think of) It is now difficult in many free societies for the Church to be present in the public square, but for the “so-called persecuted” Church in China to do so with such unself-conscious confidence was both remarkable and yet, to the participants, seemed entirely natural. I suspect, although they probably didn’t compare themselves to Robins, that was what the parishes of England were missing when they were no longer allowed to process the Parish boundaries.

Watching this ceremony was an experience. This wasn’t a clerical command performance, entered into reluctantly by a vaguely disinterested laity. This event mattered deeply to these people as both a religious statement and one which made important declarations about their place in their world. They applied themselves with much seriousness, even during the grain harvest, to making sure it went off with dignity and some élan. They succeeded. Their triumph become personal when it became no longer possible to sustain the disinterested observer pose, to which I have returned to write this article. Taking my turn carrying the monstrance, being pelted by clumps of wilted roses, (those girls could throw!) I found myself noticing that, despite the cultural differences; this was not just some quaint pagan custom I had happened upon. This was the Body of Christ I was carrying, and that the objective observer stance was inappropriate. Instead, all I had to do was to surrender to the moment and thank God for the opportunity to express with them our shared Faith in the Eucharist. Joining fully in the event did however create one new conundrum. Should I join the women behind me in belting out the “Tantum Ergo” or the band in front in their unique version of “Oh what a friend we have in Jesus”? Decisions, Decisions.

CHINESE FORMATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

Dandy and others,

Just checking out this BLOG. Actually, we need something to replace the CHINA YAHOO GROUP. We need to share more information on our various works as CMs in both English and Chinese while maintaining the sensitivity of materials acceptable or not acceptable on mainland. Down here in the Philippines, I have no inkling of the activities that are going on in Taiwan with my confreres. Though we participate in many varied activities and programs, we share very little with each other using the Internet. In our Province, we just 'ain't good communicators'. We need to share more from our personal experiences. The sems down here need to know they belong to a larger group of China Province brothers. I would be more than happy to share with you in writing and with photos how our 'guys' down here are doing. And Peter Solis can share what's going on in Angono with him and his three students.May this new way of communicating be helpful to all of us in our ministeries for our Province!

Last June 4, after 9-day novena Masses, the parishioners of Dawu celebrated the Pentecost and Parish Day with great spirit. Through this celebration, the people are once again being reminded that they have one Parish(since they have 8 chapels) and there is a need to strengthen the "spirit of the parish". As our rallying motto goes: "教友加油...教會起飛!"
